About the goldfish
The goldfish (Carassius auratus) is a freshwater fish from East Asia, descended from wild carp. Selective breeding in China over more than a thousand years produced the bright orange, red, and gold varieties we know today.
Goldfish were first kept in ponds and then in bowls, and they have been popular pets around the world for centuries. Their hardy nature and calm temperament make them a classic choice for beginners, though they need far more room than a small bowl can offer.
Caring for a goldfish
Goldfish produce a lot of waste, so they do best in a tank of at least 20 gallons (about 75 liters) for a single fish, with regular partial water changes and a good filter. Keep the water cool to moderate, around 18 to 23 °C (65 to 73 °F), and test it regularly for ammonia and nitrite.
Feed a small amount once or twice a day, only as much as they can finish in about two minutes. Overfeeding is one of the most common causes of health problems in pet goldfish.
